FUNDING RETURNS TO SUPPORT THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF AGRI-FOOD ENTERPRISES IN WEST CORK

WEST CORK DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP – FUNDING RETURNS TO SUPPORT THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF AGRI-FOOD ENTERPRISES IN WEST CORK

West Cork Development Partnership (WCDP) is pleased to announce that funding is now available to support the creation and development of agri-food enterprises in West Cork. Funding at a rate of 40% and up to a maximum value of €200,000 is available to micro, small and medium enterprises adding value to agri-food products.

At the start of 2011 Ireland was notified by the European Commission that support/grant aid for adding value to agri-food products was not eligible under the LEADER programme. Since then, work has been on-going to resolve this issue as a significant part of enterprise activity in rural areas focuses on food and food-related businesses. On March 6th, 2012 Phil Hogan, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government announced that €5 million in funding will be provided in 2012/2013 to support the creation and development of Agri-Food enterprises in rural Ireland.

Given that only €5 million is available nationally, the WCDP is encouraging businesses with project proposals to get in contact with Development Officer Kevin Santry, on 023 8834035 or by email to kevin@wcdp.ie, at their earliest convenience. Reacting to the announcement by Minister Hogan, Kevin said that:

“Since the freeze in funding for food projects was introduced the WCDP have been approached by a number businesses in the food industry looking for support and, unfortunately we weren’t in a position to help them. This announcement will undoubtedly be welcomed by those individuals and I imagine I will be hearing from some of them over the course of the next few days.”

“The announcement is particularly exciting given the fact that it opens the door for us to offer supports to small and medium businesses in the food sector as well as micro-enterprises. Across other sectors (and indeed previously in the food sector) we are restricted to working only with micro-enterprises, so it will be interesting to see what some of the larger food businesses in West Cork are doing or are planning to do.”

“I would definitely be encouraging food enterprises in West Cork that are looking to invest in their business to get in touch with me as soon as possible.”
