WEB WORKSHOP SERIES - Responsive Design: learn to build websites that work beautifully on any device; CMS: Discover the pros and cons of the various systems; Web Typography: exciting new features & Version Control: a new way to edit sites

RESPONSIVE DESIGN | CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS | WEB TYPOGRAPHY & VERSION CONTROL

This very practical and fun series of workshops will:

put you ahead of the competition – allow you to create websites that work beautifully on all devices – add value for your clients

THE TRAINER
John Henry Donovan is a West Cork based developer & designer who is fanatical about web technology. Originally a graduate of Industrial Design, he has spent the last 15 years being the poster boy for ‘Jack-of-all-trades’, working in all sectors including print, animation, 3D, video and web

WORKSHOPS

RESPONSIVE DESIGN – Saturday, 9th June – 9.30—17.00 – Celtic Ross Hotel – €15
Websites tailored for any device
Responsive web design allows you to design flexible sites that look good and work beautifully on phones, tablets,
laptops and even TVs alike. You can take this massive leap as a web designer, front-end developer or content editor. In this workshop you will learn how to employ fluid grids, flexible images and use CSS3 media queries while avoiding common pitfalls and mistakes. John will show the thought process and history behind responsive design and explore related web design concepts. John will lead attendees though the process of building and testing a responsive site.

CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS – Saturday, 7th July – 9.30—17.00 – Celtic Ross Hotel – €15
Stuck on WordPress?
There is a great variety of Content Management Systems (CMS) available. John will break down comparisons of the most popular and show the install process and requirements of each one. John will discuss the suitability of a CMS for particular clients based on their project needs. John will create the same sample website on each of the different CMS and show the pros and cons of each one. This workshop is perfect for a web designer or front-end developer who wants to try something new to them or they have only casually messed around with.

Saturday, 14th July – 9.30—17.00 – Celtic Ross Hotel – €15
VERSION CONTROL
The workshop takes attendees on a tour of the popular Version Control Systems particularly Git. The workshop will cover taking a website from the old FTP way of editing sites to a proper version controlled system including deployment. This workshop is not just for programmers – version control is vital for graphics and files too.

& WEB TYPOGRAPHY
Web Typography has really expanded in features over the last year or so. There are now so many options available for a designer that it’s hard to know what and when to use. John will break down the most common techniques and third-party services out there and spend some time exploring the finer points of using fonts and setting type on the web. The workshop will include experiments with newer CSS properties and throughout we will be discussing fluid content and responsive web design.

To register for any or all of the workshops contact David Tuohy: E: david@wcdp.ie T: 023 8834035

The Department of Environment, Community and Local Government has introduced a bundle of changes to the Rural Development Programme most of which are aimed at increasing the appeal of the programme and the level of spend on local projects.

The maximum rate of aid for private promoters is increased from 50% to 75%. Please note that this is the maximum rate and applications are still subject to an assessment of deadweight, i.e. we can not offer more than the project actually needs to be viable.

Food projects – applications received prior to 12/01/2011 may now proceed to evaluation. Projects in pipeline at 12/01/2011 can apply for the remaining funding. WCDP has several projects in the pipeline that we would hope to now progress. The rate of aid is 40%

Local Authorities may now act as project promoters – this will only apply to projects that are outside the statutory remit of the Authority and must be carried out in partnership with a community group. The community group is still required to provide at least 5% cash.

New guidelines and procedures for Heritage projects have been introduced though may still be in draft form. The main emphasis is on the use of specialist contractors for all works projects on projects of significant heritage or environmental importance. There is also a strong emphasis on consultation with the relevant agencies, including a possible requirement for a national committee to approve all heritage projects.

We have been told that we can once again consider applications from community groups for the flagship project to a maximum of €500,000 under the Basic Services and Village Enhancement measures.

An investment in walking trails and services could bring nearly €22 million to the West Cork economy a new study has revealed.

It is estimated that walking trails and supporting services are generating €14 million for the local economy of West Cork’s West Coast. However, some relatively modest investment could increase the value of walking tourism to West Cork by nearly €8 million to €22 million a new study has revealed.

The West Cork Development Partnership has recently completed a comprehensive strategic assessment and appraisal of the economic opportunities for the development of Walking Tourism in West Cork. The study seeks as its principal aim, to devise an economic vision, strategy and roadmap that will assist local stakeholders in maximising local economic benefit from sustainable economic activities derived from and associated with walking tourism. The study also presents newly collated data on the current direct economic value (revenues and employment) directly generated by walking tourism in the West Cork region.

The full study is available as a free download here…

Business strategy and financial planning

Market research

West Cork Development Partnership has a regular and ongoing need for project promoter mentoring and will offer the panel members the opportunity to bid for each individual mentoring arrangement as it arises. A mentoring brief and scoring criteria will be included with each invitation to tender. Where no suitable tenders are received, we reserve the right to advertise publicly or invite tenders from service providers not on the panel.

Three other community groups were awarded prizes including the Drogheda, Tyrrellspass and Clara Bog organising committees, for their work in running successful events. The Drimoleague event was the two-day Contemplative St Finbarr’s Pilgrim Walk on which 36 people walked from the Top of the Rock to Gougane Barra on the weekend of August 20th 2011. The Drimoleague group were introduced to members of the Heritage Council and then enjoyed lunch at the splendidly refurbished Bishop’s palace in Kilkenny, home to the Heritage Council. St Finbarr’s Pilgrim Way begins at the Top of the Rock, Drimoleague and follows the Eastern Sheeps Head Way to Kealkil where it converges with the Beara-Breffni Way as far as Gougane Barra.
This year the organisers hope to run the St Finbarr’s Community walk on 11-12th August and the Contemplative Walk on 18th -19th August. To book a place on either walk, contact liz_dromusta@yahoo.co.uk or davidross316@gmail.com respectively and see www.drimoleaguewalkway.com for more details.
