UCC are offering this new course in the WCDP Offices in Bantry this Autumn in conjunction with WCDP:
Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies
Hardly a day goes by without some mention in the media of autism, asperger syndrome or ASD. Often it describes the difficulties encountered by parents sourcing services or appropriate education for their children. Sometimes it is the personal account of a person who is on the Autistic Spectrum. So what exactly is autism? What does it mean to be on the autistic spectrum?
The Centre for Adult Continuing Education UCC together with Brothers of Charity, COPE Foundation, Cork Association for Autism,Shine Ireland and ACE, have designed a new and innovative programme, entitled the Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies will be available in Bantry in September. This course will invite some fundamental considerations about the ways in which people on the autistic spectrum experience the world. . It examines the historical and social practices that enabled autism to be identified. An emphasis on the communication and behavioural challenges for the individual is explored. The importance of early intervention, education and inclusion is analysed. Legislation and policies, guidelines and models of service are identified. Issues around mental health and ASD will be considered. Engagement in reflective practice and personal learning form an important part of this programme which compliments the ever popular Diploma in Disability Studies and provides progression routes to the Higher Diploma in Facilitating Inclusion (Disability Studies).
Registration for either course can either be directly through UCC – the Department of Adult Continuing Education in UCC – on-line or call Kathryn at WCDP 087-9876390 / email Kathryn@wcdp.ie for a paper version.
