The Irish Heart Foundation are organising a Community Walking Leader Training Course which will take place in Drimoleague on October 12th to 14th 2012.
The overall aim is to assist volunteers establish a walking group in their community and organise walking sessions or programmes on a regular basis. A commitment to lead a walking group for a minimum of 12 months is required after receiving the walking leaders certification. Trained Walking Leaders will be supported by the Health Promotion Department HSE South in organising and promotion of walking groups as described in the Walking Leaders agreement. It is suggested that (if possible) two people from a proposed walking group would attend.
Key Course Content is as follows:
- Current activity recommendations for adults.
- Walking for Fitness and Health
- Key elements of a Walking Session
- Planning for people of different fitness levels
- Safety issues and Insurance
- Planning sessions and programmes
- Setting Up a Community Walking Group
- Practical Walking Sessions and advice on issues such as posture, stretching, clothing, etc.

Certification:
In order to be awarded the Irish Heart Foundations’ Community Walking
Leader Certificate participants must;
- attend and participate in all of the Leader Training Course
- lead (or co-lead) at least 4 walking sessions in their community after the course.
