Farm & Fishing Related Schemes

West Cork Development Partnership operates a number of schemes targetted at supporting farming and fishing. You can find out more about these by clicking the links below and ringing one of our development officers when you have identified the support scheme you are interested in.

In addition to the direct support schemes below, we also provide advice services targeted towards the middle to lower income earning bracket of farmers. through Joe Cronin at the Bantry office. Services are provided to local farmers in 3 steps.

  1. Making contact and engaging with farm families.
  2. Identifying sources of additional income for client by re-examining current farm practices, and availing of any entitlement not currently being drawn down.
  3. Achieving financial independence, through:
  • Changes in farm practices
  • Education and training, leading towards full-time or part-time off farm employment
  • Access to Agricultural Entitlements, and other state services.

Rural Social Scheme (RSS) - provides community-based  work on a part-time basis to both farmers and fishermen. The  Rural Social Scheme aims to provide services to rural communities  by harnessing the skills and talents available in the farming and  fishing communities.  Participants work 19.5 hours per week and  these hours are based on a farmer/fisherman-friendly schedule. Walks Scheme - open to all landholders on National Waymarked Ways, Looped Walking Routes and Heritage Routes along with other trails that have been approved by the National Trails Office. The scheme will only operate where there is agreement on the entire walk and will not be available for part of a walk. Involves payment for development, enhancement and maintenance work prescribed for the recognised and agreed walking routes. For more click here or talk to Arran O’Driscoll – arran @ wcdp.ie

Salmon Hardship Fund – closed Mar 2009 - Grant assistance was targeted at the development of additional economic opportunities for crews and employees in the processing and ancillary sectors in communities where commercial salmon fishing has been a well-established activity. The scheme was available to those affected by the cessation of the mixed stock salmon fishery in West Cork. For more click here or talk to Kevin Santry – kevin @ wcdp.ie
