What is Discover Arts ?
A four week course delivered by artists offered only to unemployed people with no previous art experience
What will I learn?
Some basic art skills in printmaking and painting, ways of thinking creatively,
generating ideas and inspiring the imagination. Participants will be encouraged to collect ideas in a journal and follow them through to create an artwork. The course will also offer a social opportunity and a space to share and discuss creative ideas. Invitations to a film screening and an art exhibtion opening are included.
Who are the Artists?
The course will be delivered by visual artists John Simpson in Skibbereen and Julia Pallone in Clonakility. John is a painter living on Sherkin Island. His work is influenced by the ever changing elements of sea, sky, earth and light. He has exhibited widely and has work in public and private collections. Julia is originally from the West of France and lives in Kinsale. She explores a poetic vision of the world through drawing, photography and installations. She has exhibited extensively in France and Ireland and has been awarded several residencies.
Do I need to bring anything?
All arts materials will be provided and some course handouts will be made available. Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided also.
Is there a cost?
There is a single fee of €10 at enrolment.

Expressions of Interest Sought for Hospitality Management Skillnet Training Courses
Hospitality Management Skillnet is an industry led training initiative funded by the Department of Education and Skills.
A pioneering new feature of the programme is the provision of a percentage of training for unemployed individuals.
Hospitality Management Skillnet are delighted to announce that the following categories are now eligible to attend training courses for free.

The Ray Murphy Memorial Bursary
The Ray Murphy Memorial Bursary, which was established with initial support from The Atlantic Philanthropies, honours Ray Murphy’s commitment to developing philanthropy, social finance and the wider non-profit sector in Ireland.
The Bursary was launched by Clann Credo – the Social Investment Fund and Philanthropy Ireland to encourage postgraduate research into philanthropy, social finance and related areas.
Postgraduate students (part-time or full-time), intending to pursue either a taught or research postgraduate programme in a third-level institution on the island of Ireland, may apply.
Eligible areas of concentration include philanthropy, social finance, charities regulation, social enterprise/ entrepreneurship, not-for-profit management or other relevant topics, as approved by the Bursary Committee.
Successful applicants will receive:
- The opportunity to pursue advanced study in the area of philanthropy and/or social finance and to advance learning in what is to date an underdeveloped field in Ireland
- €10,000 bursary
- The opportunity to present and disseminate their research to relevant stakeholders in the fields of philanthropy and social finance
University College Cork (UCC) has agreed a fee waiver for any student embarking on a postgraduate programme in UCC who is supported by the Ray Murphy Memorial Bursary. Dr Michael Murphy, President, said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to honour Ray’s contribution to philanthropy in Ireland.”
Trinity College Dublin (TCD) will provide for the fee to be paid from its own resources (a ‘fee waiver’) for an EU student in the event of the Ray Murphy Memorial Bursary sponsored by the Atlantic Philanthropies coming to Trinity.
Dublin City University (DCU) has indicated that it too will make arrangements for a fee waiver.

Scenario Planning Workshop
The West Cork Development Partnership will host an intensive two day Regional Scenario Planning Workshops, the details are as follows:
Date: Thursday 20th & Friday 21st May 2010
Venue: Inchydoney Hotel, Clonakilty
Time: Thursday 20th May 9.30-4.30 & Friday 21st May 9-3.30 pm
Cost : €20 for lunch (only payable in advance)
By drawing together community, economic, social and environmental issues, the workshop will seek to create a powerful future planning tool and visioning framework that will:
- Deepen an understanding of how global events and conditions shape local decision making
- Identify and understand the key influences, trends and dynamics that will shape West Cork over the next 20 years.
- Create and describe four plausible long term scenario’s for the West Cork vision
- Seek to develop a shared vision for the region.
The success of the workshop will require participation from a broad range of local stakeholders including but not limited to the Public Sector; Community Organisations; Local Authorities; Youth; Health and Social Care; Environmental, Enterprise and Business Networks as well as representatives of Key Local Economic Sectors, Information Technology, Advocacy and Cultural Organisations.
