Think Tank Day for Cork on Sustainable Development in Ireland

Cork Chamber of Commerce, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, & Cork Environmental Forum Along with Local Development Companies
presents
Think Tank Day for Cork on A Framework for Sustainable Development in Ireland

Date: Thursday 9th February 2012
Venue: County Hall, Floor 16, Carrigrohane Road, Cork

The draft national strategy for sustainable development is open for public consultation until 29th February 2012. This provides an opportunity for all pillars of society to come together to explore, discuss and inform on challenges, conflicts and solutions and review the national document on sustainable development.

Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We plan to create an opportunity for an open and frank discussion whilst collecting and respecting diverse opinions. The aim of the day is to create a declaration that can be used in whole or in part by the various organisations represented on the day to prepare for submissions to the Department.

“Vision without action is a daydream; action without vision is a nightmare.” Japanese proverb

This is currently in draft format and is therefore subject to change

Toonsbridge Dairy

In 2009 John Lynch a dairy farmer and Toby Simmonds a director of the Real Olive Company approached WCDP with a proposal to develop specialised Southern Italian cheeses such as Mozzarella & Ricotta. Their intention was to develop an artisan handmade mozzarella that would be as good if not better than the best from Italy. Their reason for undertaking this project was that it was costing Toby €10.15/kg to import Mozzarella on average from a wholesaler in Milan, and this was not proving cost effective. Handmade mozzarella would require fresh buffalo milk. The only problem was that there were no buffalo in Ireland for them to get the raw material to produce the product. After some intensive research they came across a YouTube video of a buffalo farm in Surrey in England producing mozzarella, the following week both John & Toby went and visited the farm and discussed the viability with the herd owner. He filled them in on a number of different aspects, both from the farming side and from the production side, John then undertook a visit to another farm in Wales where he could get first-hand experience of the farm side of a buffalo enterprise, after all the research was undertaken, to their disappointment both men found out that it was almost impossible to bring animals from anywhere in the E.U. to Ireland because of Blue Tongue Disease. After further research they emailed the Buffalo Breeders Association in Italy and were given a contact in the unaffected area. They subsequently bought 31 buffalo from this farm and they arrived in Ireland in September 2009, and it’s only here the story begins. Toby and John then applied to WCDP for grant assistance of €79,400 (50%) with 50% of their own money towards cheese manufacturing equipment.  For further information check out their website www.realoliveco.com.

West Cork Drama Festival – St. Mary’s Theatre, Rossmore

In late 2010, the West Cork Drama Festival Committee met with WCDP to discuss their proposal to extend the facilities at St. Mary’s Theatre in Rossmore. Home to the Kilmeen Drama Group, the facility was originally built in 1948, and with alterations over the years has grown to become one of the key amateur drama venues in the region. However, they needed to upgrade the performance area to comply with the standards as set out by the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland. In February 2011, the group were approved funding of €150,000 towards the new extension to the facility. Following six months of construction, the new facility opened in October of this year. In September, West Cork Drama Festival was awarded as the venue All Ireland 3-Act Confined Finals in 2013. This will be a fantastic boost for the economy of the greater Clonakilty region. Following on from this success, this month Kilmeen Drama Group were the Outright Winners of the All Ireland One Act Drama Festival held in Ennis, Co. Clare. To keep up to date with all events and activities in this lively spot, take a look at their website www.westcorkdramafestival.com.
